A24 has released the trailer for its upcoming film Past Lives, starring Greta Lee and Teo Yoo.
Playwright Celina Song wrote and directed the film, Deadline reports. It follows childhood friends Nora (Lee) and Hae Sung (Yoo) who are ripped apart when Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Nearly 20 years later, and now married Nora reunites with Hae Sung in New York City.
Song told Deadline that the film is loosely based on events in her own life.
“I actually found myself sitting in between my childhood sweetheart from Korea, who only speaks Korean, and my husband, who only speaks English,” she said. “I found myself sitting there as a bilingual and bicultural person, being able to speak to and connect with both men, and I could also feel myself be somebody who is also lovable by both men. And to me, that really was the beginning of the whole film.”
Past Lives will premier in theaters some time this year.
