New updated statistics from the FBI show that hate crimes against Asian Americans surged 161 percent in 2021, reports the Marshall Project.
Reported hate crimes against Asian Americans went from 279 in 2020 to 746 the following year.
That’s the largest jump of any protected group followed by the LGBTQ community which saw a jump of 70 percent from 306 to 521.
Overall, the FBI investigated 3,277 hate crimes against Black Americans, the highest of any group.
According to NPR, 12,411 individuals were victims of hate crimes in 2021.
Crimes against Asian and Pacific Islanders, Sikhs, and bisexual people all more than doubled.
Crimes against Black people, White Americans and LGBTQ people made up half the cases.
The FBI came under intense criticism for the underreporting of hate crimes in its initial report released in December.

According to the Marshall Report, the FBI went back to police departments that failed to report their data. Nearly 40 percent had failed to report including New York and California due to a new way of reporting.
The number of hate crimes against Asian Americans more than doubled from 300 to nearly 800 in the updated data.
Manjusha Kulkarni of Stop AAPI Hate says national security issues and high inflation are driving the scapegoating of Asian Americans.
