The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT) and other community leaders held a news conference this morning to call for hate crime charges in the attack on Connecticut State Representative Maryam Khan.
The news conference comes on the same day her alleged attacker is set to appear in court.
CAIR-CT announced yesterday that it would hold a news conference outside of the Hartford courthouse on July 17 at 9:30 a.m. ET. The organization said specifically said it would hold a rally and a news conference but it is unclear if they are two individual events.
Rep. Khan and her family were attacked at an Eid prayer service on Wednesday, June 27 in Hartford. According to KXXV, a man allegedly made “vulgar and obscene remarks” toward Khan before throwing her to the ground.
Police arrested 30-year-old Andre Desmond as a suspect in the attack. He appeared in court this morning.
In a June 28 press release, CAIR-CT asked for a hate crime investigation into the attack.
“We urge local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this attack and to ensure the safety of the Connecticut Muslim community during the ongoing Eid al-Adha celebrations,” said CAIR-Connecticut Chair Farhan Memon.
Now the organization and other leaders are calling for hate crime charges.
