Kimiko Glenn’s TikTok showing measly royalties resurfaces amid SAG strike

A nearly three-year-old TikTok from actress Kimiko Glenn is gaining attention again amidst the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actor’s Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strike.

Glenn is known for her work on the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black. The show is one of Netflix’s most successful originals series, winning several Emmys. How much did Glenn earn in royalties for the show? According to one TikTok, just $27.30.

In December 2020, Glenn posted a TikTok showing her “foreign royalty statement” for Orange is the New Black.

“I’m about to be show rich,” Glenn says at the start of the video.

The video then pans to the bottom of the royalties sheet, displaying a total of just $27.30.

“What?” Glenn exclaims.

“This is why we need new leadership in SAG-AFTRA that will fight harder to fix our new media residuals,” Adam Conover, a television host and comedian, wrote in the comments of Glenn’s TikTok on December 26, 2020.

Today, SAG-AFTRA is at the beginning of what could be a lengthy strike. Glenn and her castmates are speaking out against the unfair pay they received while working on Orange is the New Black.

“So many of my friends who have nearly a million followers, who are doing billion-dollar franchises, don’t know how to make rent,” Glenn said in an interview with The New Yorker.

Many other AAPI actors are speaking out about the importance of the strike. Daniel Dae Kim posted videos on social media helping to explain the strike to non-actors.
