The New York Police Department are investigating a possible anti-Asian hate crime on a subway train in New York City.
According to Insider, the incident allegedly occurred on August 3 train on a southbound F train at West 4th Street. It was filmed by an Asian passenger named Joanna Lin, an entrepreneur focusing on travel and drinks content.
In the video, Lin captures a group of three young girls arguing with an Asian family. Eventually, an altercation between multiple people on the train breaks out.
Sue Young, the mother who is captured in the video, told CBS News she hoped that the girls were not making fun of her family when she saw them laughing. She laughed with them, which she claims made the situation worse.
“It was just insult, after insult, after insult. And, finally, my husband felt like he needed to step in and so he was like, ‘Can you use some better words besides those?'” Young told CBS News.
Lin also alleges that one girl attacked her while trying to stop her from filming.
“She darted over, took me by the hair, threw me on the ground, and started punching me,” Lin told ABC 7 New York.
Young responded by pushing one of the girls, and the girl fought back.
NYPD told Insider that Lin sustained swelling and bruising to the head. They are investigating the incident as a hate crime and are searching for the woman who attacked Lin.
Young told CBS News she wants to meet with the young girls. She hopes it will be a teachable moment for everyone including her own 11-year-old twin daughters who were present that day.
“I want everyone to see that we can bridge this, that maybe there’s good in those girls. And I want something positive to come out, instead of just throwing them in jail,” Young said.
