Kim Ng leaves Miami Marlins, won’t return as General Manager

Kim Ng won’t return as the general manager of the Miami Marlins, a Major League Baseball team in 2024.

Ng told The Athletic she left because she did not feel “completely aligned” with the vision of principal owner Bruce Sherman. Sources also told ESPN that the team’s interest in hiring a president of baseball operations over Ng led to her departure.

Ng was hired in November 2020, becoming the first female general manager in any of the four major North American men’s professional sports leagues (MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA).

According to The Washington Post, the Marlins announced her departure on Monday.

“We thank Kim for her contributions during her time with our organization and wish her and her family well,” the Marlins wrote in that statement. “We will immediately begin a thorough and extensive search for new leadership as we continue to invest in the Marlins organization on and off the field. We are committed to our fans and the South Florida community and look to build off the momentum of the great progress of this year.”

Ng’s contract included a mutual option that would have extended her position through the 2024 season, CNN reports. Sherman, principal owner and chairman of the Marlins, said in a statement that the team exercised their end of the option but Ng declined hers.

The Marlins reached the playoffs this year for the first time since 2003 but lost in the wild card series. According to The Washington Post, Ng managed to get the team to the playoffs despite having one of the lowest payrolls in the league. Fans and analysts have frequently criticized Sherman’s unwillingness to expand the Marlins’ payroll.

Sources told ESPN that Ng’s fellow executives in baseball were surprised that the Marlins were thinking of hiring someone over her given the team’s successful 2023 season.

Ng spoke with The Athletic on Monday around the time the Marlins announced her departure. She said she made her decision after speaking to Sherman last week about his plans to reshape the team’s baseball operations.

“In our discussions, it became apparent that we were not completely aligned on what that should look like and I felt it best to step away,” Ng told The Athletic.

She also thanked the “Marlins family and its fans.”

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Marlins family and its fans for my time in South Florida,” Ng said, per The Athletic. “This year was a great step forward for the organization, and I will miss working with Skip and his coaches as well as all of the dedicated staff in baseball operations and throughout the front office. They are a very talented group and I wish them great success in the future.”
