Four ‘Asian’ languages make Duolingo Top 10 for 2023

Four languages commonly spoken in Asia have made Duolingo’s Top 10 list of the most popular languages studied in 2023.

The company posted a list on social media. Japanese and Korean were the 5th and 6th most studies languages on the app respectively. Hindi came in at 8th and Chinese at 9th. It is unclear whether the Chinese language Duolingo is referring to is Mandarin or Cantonese.

According to the full report posted on the company’s website, Korean grew 75% year-over-year and overtook Italian to claim the number 6 spot.

Asian languages also appear to be popular among young adults. The report found that 86% of people studying Japanese and 76% of people studying Chinese are under 30.
