Awkwafina has been chosen to lead the 2024 Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco on February 24.
According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the actress, also known as Nora Lunn, will be the parade’s grand marshall. Former mayor Willie Brown will be the honorary grand marshall.
“It’s such an honor to serve as Grand Marshal of the San Francisco Lunar New Year Parade! I’m so excited to celebrate with our community,” Awkwafina said in a statement per The San Francisco Standard. “Having been born in the year of the dragon, I look forward to fostering growth and progress that the upcoming year will bring for us.”
Harlan Wong, a board member of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the parade’s director, told The San Francisco Standard that it has taken a lot of effort to get Awkwafina for the parade.
“She’s busy,” Wong said. “We keep asking, keep pushing and reaching out.”
The parade will celebrate the Year of the Dragon. It will start at 5:00 p.m. on Second and Market Streets. Tickets for bleacher seating are now available for purchase online.
