Councilmember Susan Zhuang was inaugurated on Sunday. According to the Roma Sentinel, she is set to represent district 43, a newly created district in south Brooklyn.
Zhuang was born and raised in Baipu, a town in Eastern China. According to the New York City Council website, she moved to the United States in 2008 to study. She earned her bachelor’s degree in finance at the State Universty of New York at Oswego and a Masters of Business Administration from University of Southern Indiana.
After earning her MBA, she moved to New York City and worked in the private sector while volunteering at the Office of New York State Assemblyman William Colton. As a volunteer, she helped senior citizens and small businesses navigate their finances.
Zhuang has said she is dedicated to representing Asians in South Brooklyn. According to the Roma Sentinel, district 43 was created to improve AAPI representation in the borough.
“We are celebrating the Year of the Dragon. We have the spirit of the dragon that we never give up,” Zhuang said per News 12. “ …Thank you America and New York City for making my immigrant success story possible.”
