A man has pleaded guilty to committing a federal hate crime by physically assaulting an Asian American student, FOX 19 Cincinnati reports.
The assault occurred over two years ago on Aug. 17, 2021, at the University of Cincinnati. According to WCPO, 27-year-old Darrin Johnson admitted to assaulting an Asian American student because of his race.
Court documents stated that Johnson made racist comments before punching the student in the head.
“Go back to your country…You brought kung flu here…You’re going to die for bringing it,” Johnson said, according to the documents.
Johnson pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and criminal intimidation in October 2021. He was sentenced to 360 days in jail, WCPO reports. Those involved with the federal case against Johnson have recommended that he serve 22 months in prison.
