The Filipino American community in New York is receiving over $1.6 million in Federal Community Project Funding. The grant will go towards the National Federation of Filipino American Associations New York Chapter (NaFFAA NY) to invest in a community center in Woodside, Queens.
According to The FilAm, the funding was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden with the “unwavering support” of Representative Grace Meng (D-Queens). This is the largest federal grant awarded to an organization focusing on serving the Filipino American community in New York.
“We extend our sincerest gratitude to Representative Grace Meng for her commitment to the district, and empowering and enriching its residents in need,” Rachelle Ocampo, president of NaFFAA NY, told The FilAm. “This funding will enable us to expand our collective reach and impact, providing a dedicated space for our community to come together, celebrate our Filipino heritage, and access valuable resources.”
With the funding as the cornerstone, NaFFAA NY plans on building a community center designed to host educational, cultural, and social services for the Filipino American community, reported GMA News. The goal is to empower the community through leadership development, civic engagement, and community building.
Filipino American and New York State Assemblymember Steven Raga told GMA that he is grateful for Congresswoman Meng’s efforts.
“This historic $1.6 million investment for a multicultural community center in Assembly District 30 addresses the increasing need for a venue for smaller community-based organizations to convene, collaborate, and provide culturally competent services to all,” Raga stated.
According to The FilAm, it is currently unclear when the money will arrive in NaFFAA NY accounts, as well as the specific parameters around the fund’s allocation and deliverables. NaFFAA NY is also in the process of finding a location for the center and asking the community for leads. This will surely expand the responsibilities of the organization, and Ocampo said they will hire at least one full-time staff member to oversee the community center.
