AsAmNews is pleased to announce its hired Yiming Fu as its new Report for America corps member.
Fu, who will graduate from Northwestern University this June with a BS in journalism and a minor in Asian American Studies, will join us with a wealth of domestic and international reporting experience.
He’s interned at The Daily Maverick in Johannesburg, South Africa and served as Senior Features Editor at North by Northwestern Magazine and Managing Editor at The Daily Northwestern.
In addition, he covered the Capitol Hill beat in Washington, D.C. for the Medill News Service and also spent time at WGBH radio in Boston.
“Yiming is mature beyond his age,” said Randall Yip, Executive Editor of AsAmNews. “His insights on both the Asian American and queer communities and his empathy for the oppressed and underserved will serve him well in Maui where he will cover the recovery of Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and Filipinos from the Maui fire.”
AsAmNews is one of about 60 host newsrooms across the country selected to be part of this year’s class of corps members. Newsrooms range from public radio stations in North Carolina and Rhode Island to the Mississippi Free Press and the Associated Press in Alabama. Outlets include TV stations, print and digital publications and radio.
Established in 2017 by The Groundtruth Project, Report for America has placed more than 650 journalists in newsrooms with the goals of strengthening both news coverage and democracy.
The program covers almost 50 percent of the reporter’s salary the first year and 33% the second year. It selected AsAmNews to be a host newsroom because of our diverse coverage and ability to reach out across platforms and cultures. We are also a vibrant and growing newsroom with the potential to expand both our coverage and reach.
“Report for America extends a welcoming hand to journalists from diverse backgrounds, encouraging them to add their experience, perspective, and talent to local newsrooms nationwide. These storytellers help ensure that under-covered communities and issues receive the attention they deserve,” said Earl Johnson, vice president of recruitment and alumni engagement at Report for America. “Here, journalists find not just a job but a calling—a chance to make a profound difference where it matters most.”
Fu begins his new assignment in the summer. He would appreciate anyone with leads on affordable housing in Maui to contact us at info at asamnews dot com.
