Seattle officer faces possible discipline for racist slurs

A Seattle-based non-profit says it’s watching closely the pending decision about how the city’s police department will handle an officer who attacked a Chinese American neighbor with racial slurs.

The Office of Police Accountability found Officer Burton Hill violated the department policy against bias and its standards of professionalism, reported The Stranger.

That was 10 days ago, but still no ruling from Police Chief Adrian Diaz on what discipline Hill may face.

“We’re awaiting the decision from the Seattle Police Chief,” Michael Itti, executive director of the Chinese Information and Service Center told AsAmNews Monday.

As AsAmNews reported, Itti’s group filed a formal complaint about Hill back in September of last year.

The incident gained widespread media attention in Seattle when a tape of the encounter between Hill and his neighbor Zhen Jin surfaces of Hill allegedly calling Jin the racial anti-Asian slur “ch*nk” and a “c*nt,” a sexist term used to demean women.

The incident happened in August of 2022 while Hill was off duty. The Department has said to The Stranger that even off duty officers “may not engage in behavior that undermines public trust.”
