The Amazon Prime Video sequel series, Blade Runner 2099, is set to start filming this month, with production lasting until December.
This update, revealed by Collider, comes two years after the series was announced in September 2022, with Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) being announced at the show’s lead earlier in May.
Set fifty years after Blade Runner 2049, Yeoh, leading an ensemble cast, is set to play Olwen, a replicant near the end of her life. The series is also expected to cover “the philosophical and ethical questions that have defined the Blade Runner saga, exploring new facets of human and replicant coexistence in a future society”, according to Collider. Other than that, details about the project currently remain scarce.
Ridley Scott, the director of the original Blade Runner film and the producer of Blade Runner 2049, is set to return as a producer for the series. Writer and executive producer Silka Lusia (Shining Girls, Halo), will serve as the series’s showrunner, and Michael Green, who co-wrote the script for Blade Runner 2049, and recently co-created the acclaimed Netflix series Blue Eye Samurai, is set to serve as an executive producer.
“We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors,” said Vernon Sanders, Amazon Studios’ Head of Global Television back in September 2022, according to Koimoi.

Though the full list of directors is currently kept secret, Jonathan van Tulleken (Shogun, Top Boy), is set to be the director of the first two episodes.
The filming locations for Blade Runner 2099 have been confirmed to be in Prague and Spain. While filming is set to start this month, and despite being set to stream on Amazon Prime, the series does not currently have a set premiere date.
