Uber driver Paul Bessette had just dropped off a passenger near the gateway to Chicago Chinatown when he saw something very disturbing.
At least two culprits were beating and robbing an older man at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday.
“The guy was bleeding out of his head, and they were still hitting him. And I was just thinking, man someone needs to do something,” Bessette said to ABC7.
He began honking his horn hoping to scare the suspects away. Instead, one of them shot at him. The bullet pierced his window and went through his shoulder strap before striking him.
“I just grabbed my chest, squeezed it really hard. I started to feel tingling across my chest,” Bessette said to WGN. “I knew I had to get out of there so, I turned my wheel all the way and gunned it.”

He managed to get away from the scene, pull over and call 911. All he could think about were his kids and wanting to give them a hug.
He said doctors would later describe his wound as superficial. He is now resting at his parent’s home in Florida.
As for the man he tried to help, paramedics took him to the hospital with head injuries. Not much is known about the older man, including his ethnicity or condition, reports CBS Chicago.
No arrests have been made and no description has been released about the suspect.
