NASA astronaut Jonny Kim is set to fly his first mission to space in March.
The space agency selected him to blast off to the International Space Station with Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, reports the Houston Chronicle.
The trio will be aboard the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft from Roscosmos.
Kim will serve as a flight engineer on the mission. He first entering the NASA training program in 2017 and subsequently joining Project Artemis which is designed to send astronauts to the moon.
“I’m incredibly honored to represent @nasa in our continued commitment to international collaboration and scientific discovery,” Kim said on Instagram.
Kim says he has worked as an operations officer, T-38 operations liaison, and space station capcom chief engineer.
In 2020, NASA named Kim to a team of 18 astronauts to join its moon landing program.
The first-generation Korean American is a trained Navy SEAL.
“My parents were South Korean immigrants who came to the U.S. in the early 80s for the hope of a better future for their children,” he said in 2019.
