Ghost of Tsushima Sequel, Ghost of Yotei, announced for 2025

Developer Sucker Punch Productions has announced the follow-up to their 2020 hit game Ghost of Tsushima, titled Ghost of Yotei, for a 2025 debut.

The announcement was made at Playstation’s State of Play presentation on Tuesday, where Sony made other first and third-party game announcements.

Set in 1274 on Tsushima Island, amidst the first Mongol invasion of Japan, Ghost of Tsushima follows a samurai named Jin Sakai, who must either choose to fight by an honorable warrior code, or through practical but dishonorable methods, to repel the Mongols with minimal casualties.

Ghost of Yotei takes place over 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, being set in 1603 in the lands surrounding Mount Yotei in Hokkaido, and follows a new protagonist Atsu, portrayed by Erika Ishii (Apex Legends, Mortal Kombat 1), as she travels across the land accompanied by a mysterious new wolf companion.

“In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers,” said Sucker Punch Productions Senior Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb, in a Playstation blogpost. “It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell.”

Goldfarb explained, “When we set out to make a new Ghost game, we wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world.”

“We also wanted to continue to innovate. To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead,” Goldfarb continued. “At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”

Ghost of Yotei will also be the first Sucker Punch game that will be “built from the ground up for PlayStation 5.”, and will feature new weapons, mechanics, and gameplay improvements. The game will also have bigger sight lines, allowing players to look further across the environment, more realistic wind and vegetation movements, and new skies featuring auroras and twinkling stars, and much more.

As said by GameSpot, Ghost of Tsushima was one of Sony’s fastest-selling games at launch, and has sold over 8 million copies as of 2022, and was given a 9/10 by IGN. A director’s cut of the game with additional features was released to PC earlier this year. A multiplayer version of the game Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, was released in October 2020, and later launched as a separate offering in September 2021.

In addition to Ghost of Yotei, a Ghost of Tsushima movie helmed by Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick franchise, as mentioned by Variety.
