Two men were killed in a shooting at a home in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood.
Officers responded to a call about the shooting at approximately 10 p.m. on Tuesday, according to CBS News. Outside the front of the home, they found a man with gunshot wounds, who was pronounced dead on-site.
Officers found another man at the back of the home with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The victims have since been identified as Jianru Zheng, 33, and Faliang Gao, 32, CBS News reports.
Alderwoman Nicole Lee, a Chinatown resident who lives in close proximity to the location of the shooting, is cautioning fellow residents to be aware of their surroundings, according to ABC 7.
“What we need to do is continue to work with police,” Lee said to ABC 7. “We need to be vigilant as community members, we need to, if we see something, say something. We don’t have ShotSpotter anymore at this point … Now we rely more on the public to report these crimes.”
ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection technology that Chicago initially rolled out in 2017, was canceled in September, despite the city’s alderpeople pushing to keep it, CBS News writes. The system is approximately three minutes faster at alerting emergency responders than 911 calls.
While homicides are down in the area, other types of criminal activity have seen significant increases, according to CBS News. Chinatown residents have previously disclosed their concerns to Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling in a public hearing earlier this year.
WGN 9 reports that police suspect the incident was a targeted robbery related to drugs.
No arrests have been made, and detectives are still investigating.
