Emmy and Grammy award-winning director and producer Hiro Murai is set to make his feature film debut as the director of A24’s upcoming samurai epic, Bushido.
According to multiple sources, details surrounding Bushido‘s plot are currently confidential, but the film is described as a “high-stakes action film set against the backdrop of feudal Japan”.
Murai will be directing the film based on a script written by Henry Dunham (The Standoff at Sparrow Creek). Murai and Dunham will also produce Bushido alongside Square Peg’s Ari Aster (Midsommar, Hereditary) and Lars Knudsen (Dream Scenario, The Northman), and 2AM’s Julia Oh (Eileen, American Honey), Christine D’Souza Gelb (Past Lives, Bodies Bodies Bodies), and David Hinojosa (The Brutalist, First Reformed).
Murai is best known for his work on television and music videos, such as his work on Atlanta, Barry, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and collaborations with artists such as Childish Gambino, Earl Sweatshirt, and Death Cab for Cutie. He has previously directed the short films Guava Island and Clapping for the Wrong Reasons. He previously won a Grammy for directing the music video for This is America, and an Emmy for his work as one of The Bear‘s executive producers.
