California State Attorney General Rob Bonta Monday sued the former landlord of Cathay Manor, a troubled low-income housing development in Los Angeles’ Chinatown, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Its elderly tenants have endured inoperable elevators in the 16-story building, trapping some tenants on the upper floors with no way to exit.
Others who were more mobile were forced to climb as many as 15 flights of stairs.
The lawsuit accuses the Chinese Committee on Aging Housing Corp and its president with mismanagement and of failing to ensure the health and safety of the tenants of Cathay Manor.
According to My News LA, the lawsuit calls for the corporation to be dissolved.
Last year, under pressure, Toy sold the corporation. Bonta’s lawsuit is demanding that the sales from the proceeds be given to another non-profit for affordable senior housing.
“CCOA Housing Corp. completely failed in their mission,” Bonta said. “It’s wrong. They misused the money. People, seniors, vulnerable populations were hurt.”
A representative of Toy or the Chinese Committee on Aging Housing Corp could not be reached for comment.
