Congressmember Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) read a passage from the Bhagavad Gita during the Bipartisan Interfaith Prayer Service. The service celebrated the first day of the 119th Congress.
According to a press release from Rep. Krishnamoorthi’s office, the Congressman was the only Hindu representative to speak at the service.
“Years ago, Hindu Americans were not included at prayer services in our nation’s capital,” Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said. “I’m grateful that we now have a seat at the table and that I can play a part in spreading the beautiful blessings of the Hindu faith to my colleagues, both Republican and Democrat. Together we prayed for peace and prosperity, and in doing so are better equipped to tackle our nation’s toughest challenges ahead.”
Rep. Krishnamoorthi has represented the 8th district in Illinois since 2017. He was sworn in to be a part of the 119th Congress on Friday.
“Serving out communities in Congress is the honor of a lifetime,” he said in an Instagram post. “Last week, as I was sworn in for another term as your representative in Washington, I could not be more thankful and excited for the opportunities ahead.”
