Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee was recently honored for being a kidney disease health advocate.
Health magazine named Lee a Kidney Health Advocate as a part of their 2025 Advocacy Awards. The gymnast was diagnosed with two incurable kidney diseases in 2023 while training for a chance to go to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Any diagnosis can feel really deterring and defeating, but remembering that you are more than your diagnosis is so essential,” Lee told Health. “Be vocal about your health concerns. You are your best advocate. If you feel something is off, talk to your doctor. If you don’t feel like it’s getting better, ask them to ask you more questions. Don’t settle when it comes to your health.”
The Olympic champion hopes to use her experiences to help others.
“I hope to be a beacon for individuals going through health struggles, helping them advocate for themselves to speak with their doctors, find root causes, and get proper treatment,” Lee told Health.
Lee and her coaches were also recently celebrated by Midwest Gymnastics in Minnesota, Pioneer Press reports.
