Mindy Kaling’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was unveiled during a ceremony on Tuesday. Kaling received the star for her influence in film and television as a writer, actress, producer and director.
“I was always an ambitious kid telling my parents I was going to make it,” Kaling told NBC Los Angeles after the unveiling. “But what’s so special about this moment is that when you’re a kid you’re just saying that because you hope your parents believe it. So the fact that it actually came true is so meaningful to me.”
“I wish my mother was here to see it, but I feel lucky that my Dad is” she added.
Kaling’s career took off after her time as a writer and actress on The Office. She has starred in films like Late Night, A Wrinkle in Time and Ocean’s 8. She wrote, produced and starred in her own show The Mindy Project. She is the creator of two successful television shows: The Sex Lives of College Girls and Never Have I Ever.
Over the past few years, Kaling has also become a mother of three children.
B.J. Novak attended the unveiling ceremony. The pair met as writers on The Office, briefly dated and forged a lifelong friendship. During her remarks at the ceremony, Kaling, per PEOPLE Magazine, called Novak an “integral part of my family.”
Novak also spoke at the ceremony, joking that Kaling loved being famous.
“Mindy respects and understands this in a very intuitive way,” Novak said, per CNN. “Because in addition to being a brilliant and wildly successful showrunner, an incredible mother-of-three, a deep and caring daughter and friend and mentor to so many, Mindy is also, in her spare time, I assure you, very superficial.”
