Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s pick for FBI director, is one step closer to confirmation, POLITICO reports.
On Tuesday, the Senate voted 48-45 to move forward with the nomination. The official confirmation vote will be held later this week.
According to Reuters, Patel was highly critical of the FBI’s investigations into Trump. He has called for extreme change within the organization. POLITICO reports that he plans to shut down the FBI’s headquarters in Washington D.C. on the first day of his reign.
Patel’s nomination, POLITICO says, is part of Trump’s plans to weaponize the FBI against his enemies.
Democrats feel that Patel is unfit for the position and have criticized Senate Republicans for moving forward with the nomination process.
“My Senate Republican colleagues, sadly, are willfully ignoring myriad red flags about Mr. Patel, especially his recurring instinct to threaten retribution against his political enemies and President Trump’s perceived enemies,” Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) said in a statement. “This is an extremely dangerous characteristic for someone who seeks to lead the nation’s most powerful domestic investigative agency for the next 10 years.”
