American YouTuber Johnny Somali faces deportation from Korea

The last laugh may be on prankster and pop culture influencer Johnny Somali in South Korea.

He recently pled guilty to three charges in connection with offensive acts performed in public in the Republic of Korea.

Immigration attorney Kim Ju-hyeong has been watching the trial of Somali,

whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael. Kim says expulsion from the country is likely following the guilty pleas.

“Foreigners are ordered to leave the country, either voluntarily or forcibly, if their criminal actions result in a fine of more than 3 million won ($2,058). Considering the multiple charges against Ismael and the serious nature of his offenses, it is very unlikely that he will receive a lighter penalty than this,” he said to the Korea Herald.

Ismael pled guilty of all three charges after he admitted to kissing a comfort women statue, a memorial to sexual slaves in Korea, as well as causing a public nuisance at a convenience store and again on public transportation with a smelly bag of fish and loud music.

His antics have caused outraged in South Korea.

“These are clear insults to Korean history,” said Seo Kyung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University to the South China Morning Post. “I hope this case results in an appropriate ruling so that such incidents never happen again in Korea.”

Meanwhile, Dexerto reports that additional charges against Somali may be filed in the Eastern District Court. The report says those charges have yet to be announced.

Kim says the court may decide to impose jail time, which would mean Somali would have to serve that time before any possible deportation.
