Bill Chin, a man described as the last surviving WWII Chinese American veteran in Seattle, has died at the age of 99, reports the International Examiner.
A tribute on Cathay Post 186’s Facebook page described him as “a proud U.S. Army veteran. The post said “he served during WWII as a radio operator in the 93rd Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron.”
He suffered a stroke two-and-one-half-years ago and died at an adult care facility in Renton Highlands, 30 minutes southeast of Seattle.
He was born June 28 and served in the U.S. Army’s 93rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron and took part in the Battle of Rhineland and the Central European Campaign, according to Northwest Asian Weekly.
This past summer the Cathay Post 186 held a 99th birthday celebration in his honor.
“I feel very sad,” Haydon Mar, former commander of the Cathay Post, said to the International Examiner. “As I’ve grown older, I have come to really appreciate the World War II veterans and the sacrifices they’ve made for our country and our freedoms. Like other minority vets, they had to come home after the War and face discrimination.”
