Native Hawaiian epic ‘Chief of War’ gets summer premiere date

Chief of War, Jason Momoa’s new historical drama series, has been set for an August 1 release date on Apple TV+, Deadline reports.

According to Variety, the first two episodes will be released on August 1, and will be followed by weekly episodes every Friday until Sep. 19.

Set in the Hawaiian Islands in the late 18th century and based on true events, the nine-episode series follows the warrior Ka’iana (Momoa), as he tries to unite the archipelago before Western colonization, per an Apple TV+ press release, and focuses on the unification and colonization of Hawai’i from an indigenous perspective.

Aside from Momoa (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Dune), the predominately Polynesian ensemble cast also includes Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent, The Painters), Temuera Morrison (Moana 2, The Book of Boba Fett), Te Ao o Hinepehinga (Break Water, Head High), Cliff Curtis (Last Breath, Ka Whawhai Tonu), newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods (Rescue: HI-Surf, NCIS: Hawai’i), Siua Ikale’o (Normal Ain’t Normal, They Don’t Cast Shadows), Brandon Finn (FBI: International, Three Women), James Udom (The Tragedy of Macbeth, Judas and the Black Messiah), Mainei Kinimaka (The Last Manhunt, See) and Te Kohe Tuhaka (The Convert, Love and Monsters).

Chief of War was created by both Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who is also of Native Hawaiian descent. Both of them serve as executive producers, with Momoa directing the season finale. The show was originally commissioned at Apple back in 2022, and is the second series Momoa has made with Apple following the post-apocalyptic See.

Doug Jung also serves as an executive producer and the series’s showrunner. Additional executive producers include Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, Brian Mendoza, Anders Engström, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence, Tim Van Patten, and Justin Chon. Chon (Blue Bayou, Dramaworld) will be the director of the first two episodes. Chief of War will also mark Momoa’s writing debut for television.
