Vietnamese box office hit secures North American release in May

In a recent success for Vietnamese media, Skyline Media’s box-office hit and family dramedey, The Ancestral Home, has been set for a May 9 release date in North American theaters via Eastern Edge Films, per Variety.

The Ancestral Home has already risen to become Vietnam’s highest-grossing spiritual film with a $10 million box office, and has received 3 million admissions since it’s February 21 premiere. It will be dropping strategically during Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month as part of a global rollout.

Aside from box-office success, the film has created a massive social and cultural impact, garnering 3.8 million social media mentions in the first quarter of 2025 and 84% Net Sentiment Rate, the highest in it’s category.

The film centers on a Gen Z content creator who returns to her ancestral home in the hopes of going viral, “only to encounter her deceased brother’s ghost while dealing with avaricious relatives”. The Ancestral Home stars pop-star turned actress Phuong My Chi, in her first leading role, alongside Huynh Dong (Dau Be Mua Xua, Love), Dao Anh Tuan (Lost Paradise), and Hanh Thuy (The Sisters, Quy Cau). The film’s director, Huynh Lap (Blind Shaman, The Perfect Wedding), also stars in the production as well.

“We believe ‘The Ancestral Home’ reflects a strategic step forward in the global recognition of Vietnamese cinema”, said Skyline Media’s distribution manager, Alice Nguyen, to Variety. “Its overwhelming success at home and its unique blend of humor, heart, and heritage make it a natural fit for audiences abroad, especially during culturally significant moments like the Qingming Festival in Taiwan and Asian American History Month in the U.S.”

The Ancestral Home‘s first international debut was on April 2 in Taiwan through MovieCloud, to coincide with the Qingming festival. An April 24 release via Infinity Entertainment has been slated for Australia and New Zealand. Releases in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos through EST Media have also been slated.
