Takehiro Hira will starring in Lionsgate’s upcoming action thriller film, Karoshi, per The Hollywood Reporter.
While plot and character details about the upcoming project are currently confidential, Karoshi has been described as “a corporate thriller with a samurai twist”. It will take place in a Japanese-influenced New York City and features elements of revenge. “Karoshi”, in Japanese, refers to a sudden death related to overwork.
According to sources, Hira (Shogun, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) has been cast as the film’s villain. Aside from Hira, Karoshi’s cast includes Teo Yoo (Past Lives, New Year Blues) as the film’s topliner, Cynthia Erivo (Wicked, Harriet), and Isabel May (Masters of the Air, 1923).
According to ScreenRant, this could potentially be Oscar-nominated Erivo’s first role after Wicked where she earned acclaim as Elphaba.
Having a producing team that includes Chad Stahelski of John Wick: Chapter 4 also raises expectations for this film that it could ultimately turn into an action movie franchise.
Takashi Doscher (Only, Hear Us) will serve as the film’s director, and wrote the original script. Along with 87Eleven Entertainment’s Stahelski (Nobody 2, John Wick: Chapter 4), Alex Young (Ford v Ferrari, Hitman: Agent 47), and Jason Spitz (Day Shift) will be the project’s producers. Karoshi has a first-look deal with 87Eleven Entertainment.
Karoshi will begin production in June. It does not yet have a release date.
