Supreme Court ruling allows rapid deportations to “third countries”

A Supreme Court ruling on Monday will allow the Trump administration to resume deporting immigrants to countries that are not their place of origin.

According to POLITICO, the Supreme Court lifted an order from U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston that required the administration to give immigrants “meaningful” time to respond to their deportation orders and raise objections.

Judge Murphy’s order had placed a hold on many deportations as legal proceedings to determine the constitutionality of Trump’s actions got underway. Now, deportations will resume as the legal cases continue.

CBS News reports that Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented from the court’s decision.

Murphy argued later, NBC News reports, that his ruling was already violated when the Trump administration deported 8 migrants with criminal histories to South Sudan. They were given less than 24 hours’ notice.

The men are currently being held in a U.S. facility in Djibouti.

Advocates say the Trump administration’s actions have stripped immigrants of their right to due process. They have also expressed concern for the safety and well-being of people who are deported to “third countries.”

“This decision creates a dangerous situation for everyone in the United States by justifying this Administration’s blatant disregard for our laws and the constitutional rights everyone is entitled to, regardless of immigration status,” Quyên Đinh, Executive Director of SEARAC said in a statement.

“Southeast Asian Americans intimately understand the climate of fear and potential for mass harm that these actions create. These are situations that we have escaped from 50 years ago, when Southeast Asian refugees were forced to rebuild their lives in the United States after surviving war, genocide, and violence”
