Filipino American drafted number 2 in the NBA

Dylan Harper is going to the San Antonio Spurs as this year’s number 2 draft pick in the NBA.

The point guard from Rutgers played just one season there coming out of Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey, New Jersey. He averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer.

He is the son of former NBA player Ron Harper and his Filipino American mother Maria Pizzaro Harper.

She commented on TikTok to ESPN that “It’s surreal. The NBA is a very very exclusive club. He’s worked so hard to get here. I’m so proud of him.”

His mother emigrated from the Philippines as a child. She herself is a basketball player, having played for the University of New Orleans at the division 1 level. According to Soap Central, he credits his mother for teaching him his understanding of the game.

She has also been a girls’ varsity coach at Depaul Catholic High School as well as an assistant coach for the boy’s team at her son’s high school.
