The crime tracking website, Spot Crime, this week documented more than 20 thefts and robberies in California’s Oakland Chinatown since Wednesday.
ABC7 describes business owners its talked to as on edge.
“What you’re seeing is only a fraction of what has happened in Chinatown,” Carl Chan, president of Oakland’s Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, said to ABC7. “Many are not willing to, they feel that if they report it nothing happens. We have been trying to encourage them please report the incidents.”
The group Asians Never Die obtained surveillance video of one of the robberies.
Chan fears the increase in crime will keep shoppers away as we approach the Lunar New Year, the busiest time of year for Chinatown. He’s calling for additional police patrols and additional security cameras.
