The well-known Facebook group Subtle Asian Traits is receiving the Hollywood treatment.
A television series based on the group, which aims “to connect Asian individuals globally to create a community that celebrates the similarities and differences within the subtle traits of Asian culture and sub-cultures,” is currently in development. According to Rappler, the studio Jumpcut will produce the show, and the series will be set in college.
Subtle Asian Traits, which currently boasts just under two million members, was founded by nine Chinese-Australian high school students in September 2018. It has since grown into both a large community and a brand name: the group receives several hundred posts per month, and the founders have launched a merchandise line.
Jumpcut, whose founding team is comprised of Asians, bills itself as a data-driven company that aims to boost underrepresented voices and stories in Hollywood. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jumpcut utilizes an algorithm in order to highlight stories that have garnered strong levels of online engagement.
“We create a new supply of creators and creative projects and help make the industry more inclusive and global,” Jumpcut’s website reads. “With the demand for global content at an all-time high, and Hollywood losing over $10 billion a year due to lack of diversity, there has never been a more opportune time to bring much-needed change to the industry.”
For the newly-created studio, Subtle Asian Traits is one of its first projects. Jumpcut is also developing a sci-fi action film called Jack 9 and an untitled sci-fi Western this summer, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
