Muslim American leaders point to what they consider a mixed record on civil liberties as reason for concern about President Obama’s nominee to lead the FBI, reports On Islam.
“Mr. (James) Comey’s nomination to FBI director comes at a time when the president and Congress should be working together to ensure that our nation’s law enforcement and counterterrorism programs uphold longstanding commitments to civil liberties.” said a statement from the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Comey is the President’s pick to succeed Robert Mueller as director of the FBI. Mueller plans to step down this fall. Comey was deputy US Attorney General under President George W Bush. CAIR said Comey’s nomination “raises a number of serious concerns that will need to be addressed during the confirmation process by the Senate Judiciary Committee,”
Comey under then President Bush approved such CIA interrogation methods as waterboarding and sleep deprivation.
