Awkwafina will feature on the cover of Cosmopolitan’s September issue.
Awkwafina is most known for her performances in The Farewell, Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8. She has her own show on Comedy Central called Awkwafina is Nora from Queens. This month Awkwafina will star alongside Simu Liu in the Marvel blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
In Shang-Chi, Awkwafina’s character Katy is working as a valet despite graduating from Berkeley with honors. Awkwafina told The Hollywood Reporter she believed some Asian Americans would relate to Katy.
“Well, I think it’s a conundrum that a lot of Asian Americans find themselves going through,” she said in the interview. “It’s a mixture of, ‘What do I want to do? What am I supposed to be doing? What do my parents want me to be doing? What does the world want me to be doing?'”
Cosmo spoke to Awkwafina about her experience as a comedian and an actor. She admitted that dealing with criticisms from the public about her work is difficult but she has learned to turn to “actual people I love and respect, to myself and my own achievements.”
