Asian Stars Stun at Met Gala

Several Asian celebrities made an appearance at Monday night’s Met Gala. This year’s theme was American Independence, and a few stars chose to honor Asian American fashion icons.

British Asian actress Gemma Chan worked with Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung to create a look that honored Anna May Wong. Wong was the first Chinese American actress to gain international success.

Tennis star Naomi Osaka arrived in a custom Louis Vitton gown she had designed with her sister Mari. The dress is an homage to American immigrants.

“When we first heard of the theme “American” we thought of immigrants: they are what created America from the start and the blend of so many cultures and languages is what makes this country unique,” Mari wrote on Instagram. “This dress and look is a representation of that as a blend of both our Japanese and Haitian roots; from the ruffles deprived of Haitian Quadrille dress to the obi of a Japanese kimono- the mix of cultures is something to be celebrated and enjoyed.”

Eugene Lee Yang, a filmmaker and YouTube star, arrived in a suit designed by Dior. Yang is one of four members of the Try Guys, a media company that got its start at Buzzfeed. Yang has used the Try Guys channel to raise awareness about Asian American issues.

Actress, writer, producer and director Mindy Kaling chose a Tory Burch gown for the evening.

Philanthropist Sudha Reddy wore a Falguni Shane Peacock gown that was inspired by the colours of the American flag.
