Disney plus has greenlit a new action-comedy series American Born Chinese, Variety reports. The show is based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name.
The show will focus on the story of Jin Wang, a teenager balancing his high school social life with his immigrant home life. After meeting a new foreign exchange student at school, Jin becomes involved in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.
Bob’s Burgers executive producer Kelvin Yu and his brother Charlie Yu (Westworld) will serve as executive producers and writers for the show, Deadline reports. Kelvin will also serve as the showrunner.
“Gene Luen Yang’s book is a staple in American literature, and deeply important to a whole generation of readers,” Kelvin Yu told Variety.
Melvin Mar (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Jake Kasdan (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Asher Goldstein (Just Mercy) and Gene Luen Yang will also serve as executive producers.
“We are delighted to continue our relationship with Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan and thrilled that Destin Daniel Cretton is set to direct,” Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, said in a statement, according to Deadline. “The team are visionaries in bringing character-driven adventures to life, and we cannot wait for our audience to experience this fantastically memorable and imaginative adaptation of the graphic novel. This is a great universal story that moves between worlds and explores the impact of culture, identity, and acceptance through the lens of adolescence.”
