In south Texas, the Corpus Christi City Council honored its Hindu community by creating its first Hindu Heritage Month. The celebratory event will take place from October 15th through November 15th.
The Hindu community in the area started as a handful of families back in the 1970’s. Since then, it has grown to over 500 families in the Coastal Bend, KZTV 10 reports.
“It’s wonderful to see our community grow,” Bhakti Sooda, president of the South Texas Hindu Society, told KZTV 10. “And not just grow, but grow in to prominence and be supportive towards each other and the city of Corpus Christi too.”
Sooda says this month was chosen because October and November are significant for the Hindu religion. During these months they celebrate the festival of lights, their biggest festival every year.
The Corpus Christi Hindu community says this is an exciting first step to become a bigger part of the Coastal Bend community.
This is part of a larger movement organized by the Hindu community itself in the United States. Trunicle reports Dharmabased organizations, including those of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain traditions from around the world, announced the entire month of festivals, in October as the Hindu Heritage Month.
The states of both Florida and Texas also declared October Hindu Heritage Month.
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida says his state is proud of its vibrant Hindu community.
