Randall Park of Fresh off the Boat, Wandavision, and Always be My Maybe fame, will star in a new comedy, Blockbuster, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
He’ll play the lead role in a comedy set in the last Blockbuster store in America. The video store that went belly up when streaming video overtook America will be the setting for a new show ironically on this country’s most popular streaming network, Netflix.
The show is from writer Vanessa Ramos whose past hits include Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
According to Variety, Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of the single-camera series.
“When Vanessa and David first came in and shared this idea for a comedy series, we were immediately excited,” said Tracey Pakosta, head of comedy for Netflix. “This is ultimately the story of a dedicated group of co-workers, with a lot of heart. And now with the hilarious Randall Park signing on to play the lead, it’s a no-brainer.”
There actually is still one Blockbuster operating in America. That’s in Bend, OR and producers featured it in a 2020 documentary.
NBC originally expressed interest in Blockbuster, but passed on the idea.
Park came on board after Netflix picked up the program.
