Attack on interracial Asian American couple called hate crime

Police in the Central California coastal city of San Luis Obispo are seeking the public’s help in finding the culprit in the attack on a mixed-race couple.

A man described as a White male with short dark blonde hair in his late 30s or early to mid 40’s and weighing up to 200 pounds assaulted the couple as they walked their dog.

The victims say the man yelled a racial slur at the man. He then went after the woman when she pulled out her phone to call police.

Several people came out of a nearby store heard the commotion and came out to assist the couple. The suspect tried to run away, but the Asian male ran after him. Another confrontation occurred before the suspect ultimately escaped.

Police in San Luis Obispo are investigating the case as a hate crime, battery and assault.

“Crimes motivated by hate are not just attacks on innocent people – they are attacks on our entire community,”: the San Luis Obispo Police Department are saying in a statement.

The incident happened on November 23 at around 6 pm on High and Santa Barbara streets at the Railroad District in San Luis Obispo.
