A Boston College student pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter Thursday for encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide in exchange for no jail time.
The Boston Herald reports evidence showed that Inyoung You continually belittled Alexander Urtula via text and urged him to kill himself. He died by suicide two years ago hours before his graduation.
Suffolk Superior Judge Robert Ullmann called the case “heartbreaking” and sentenced You to two and a half years in jail, but suspended the sentence for 10 years as long as she obeyed the conditions of her probation.
According to People, that includes 300 hours of community service, mental health treatment, and an order not to sell her story.
“Ms. You will not profit directly or indirectly from any media presentation or any discussion or dissemination of the facts of this case,” Ullmann said, the Herald reported.
CNN reports You was present when he jumped from a parking garage onto a Boston transit station.
Prosecutors described her of being “physically, verbally and psychologically abusive.”
They say they reached the deal in close consultation with Urtula’s family.
“Today, as always, our thoughts are with Alexander’s family and loved ones,” Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins said. “Today’s plea allows them to close one chapter of their grief and hopefully move on to the next stage of their journey toward healing.”
The judge closed the hearing with final words for You.
“I just ask that you make every possible effort to live your life in a way that honors the memory of Alexander,” the judge said to her.
