Ice dancing team Madison Chock and Evan Bates finished fourth in the rhythm dance, just behind fellow Team USA pair Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue Saturday night in Beijing.
Both couples remain in contention for a medal, reported the New York Post.
According to Times, Chock and Bates danced to the medley of Billie Eilish. Bates maintained an S curve as he lifts Chock and she maneuvers from his front shoulder to his back while balancing on his legs.
The couple who really is a couple expressed dissatisfaction with their performance.
“We have some mixed feelings about that performance,” Bates said. “Mostly it was really good, but I think we had one small mistake that probably cost us some points on an important element. But it’s not over yet; we have a great free dance to look forward to.”
“Our score was a bit lower than we hoped,” Chock said, reported the Post. “We need to look at the protocol and see where we lost some levels. That’s probably where it was. But yeah, it’s not over yet.”
Chock and Bates went into the Olympics as the reigning US champs. Hubbell and Donahue just missed a medal in the 2018 games.
The ice dancing free dance is tonight and will determine who will stand on the medal stand.
France’s Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron are in first place and are the favorites for the gold going into tonight’s final with Russia’s Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov two points behind them.
If that holds up, that would leave the two American pairs competing for bronze.
The other American ice dancing team, Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker., finished 11th-enough to get them into tonight’s final.
