Philippine Consulate General Elmer Cato applauded a Filipina health worker who he says smacked a man who smeared her with saliva on a New York subway.

“A woman picked on the wrong Asian on the N train this morning,” Cato tweeted Friday. “She spat on her hand and wiped her saliva on a young Filipino hospital worker seated next to her. She then saw a few stars. Our kababayan comes from a family of boxing legends in the Philippines. #StopAsianHate

The Consul General office in New York has been outspoken about attacks in the state against Filipinos. Last year, it reported it had received at least 18 complaints of anti-Asian hate from Filipinos in the area.

Among those complaints, a consul general employee who reported being verbally harassed aboard the D Train.

“So our colleague reported that as soon as she stepped on the train she was accosted by an individual who started asking her ‘Where did you come from? Where’d you come from?’ And then the he said ‘you should go back to your country.’ He said the F-word and then he said ‘all you should die’,” Cato said one year ago in June.
