Averie Bishop became the first Asian American to be crowned Miss Texas this past weekend.
The Filipino American pageant contestant is a lawyer from Carrollton, Texas. She won the Miss Texas competition on Saturday, June 25, at Eisemann Center in Richardson, CW 33 reports.
The new Miss Texas is a first-generation law student, Narcity reports. She graduated from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in May 2022.
According to CW 33, Bishop is also on Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson’s 16-person Anti-Hate Advisory Council. The resume listed on her personal website states that she was an associate bar member at a legal clinic for crimes against women.
Bishop understands the importance of being the first Asian American to win the title.
“Representation saves lives,” she told Narcity. “I convinced myself for the longest time that I did not deserve to be Miss Texas because I never saw anyone who looked like me represent our state.”
Bishop will represent Texas in the Miss America competition later this year.
