Psy celebrates 10th anniversary of Gangnam Style

Long before BTS and BlackPink, there was Psy- the Kpop star credited with putting the genre on the world stage.

His mega-hit, Gangnam Style, debuted on July 15, 2012 and 159 days later had generated one billion views- the first video to break that barrier in YouTube history.

“Being the first artist to reach 1 billion views on YouTube was an extraordinary feeling 10 years ago and it still is today,” Psy said in a statement released to Variety. “To have played a role in paving the way for music of all kinds to transcend borders is a true honor.”

Today Gangnam style has 4.47 billion views and remains in the top 5 of most-viewed music videos ever on YouTube.

Mashable reports Psy remains relevant today with is own record label, PNation, and with his collaboration with BTS’s Suga, the single That That.

He’s happy to see today’s KPop acts like BTS attain even greater prominence and longevity than him.

“If they continue like this, though they’re not doing music for the sake of raising national prestige, I think they’re giving [Korea] a lot of proud moments,” Psy added about BTS. “I feel very proud that I had a role in being that trigger. BTS have thanked me for that part several times, so I’m proud of it.”
