PBS announced Tuesday it promoted its chief correspondent Amna Nawaz to co-anchor of its flagship newscast, the PBS Newshour.
The Pakistani American will take the helm with her new co-anchor, PBS News Weekend anchor Geoff Bennett. Both will succeed Judy Woodruff who announced she would be stepping down last week after solo anchoring the newcast since 2016.
“Today is a day I never could’ve imagined when I began my journalism career years ago, or while growing up as a first-generation, Muslim, Pakistani-American. I’m grateful, humbled, and excited for what’s ahead,” she said in a statement.
The Peabody-award-winning Nawaz has served as the primary substitute anchor since she joined PBS in 2018. She previously worked for ABC News where she lead the 2016 presidential election coverage on its streaming platform, as well as anchoring breaking news coverage. She also worked as the Islamabad Bureau Chief at NBC News and as managing editor of its vertical, NBC Asian America.
Bennett has covered five presidential elections and worked at the White House under three presidents. He has also worked at MSNBC and NPR.
