Police in New York today confirmed to AsAmNews the arrest of a 28-year-old man in the unprovoked assault on an Asian American boy.

Authorities say Jamal McIlwain of Brooklyn beat the 12 year old in the head with a crutch. The boy sustained injuries to his head and was treated at urgent care and listed in stable condition.

The injuries are considered minor. Authorities do not know what provoked the attack but says Mcllwain has a long criminal record that includes possession of drugs, assault and possession of a firearm.

Police earlier had released video of the assault with shows a man running across the street and swinging his crutch multiple times at the boy, before running off.

The arrest occurred on November 23, six days after the November 17th incident on Saint Paul’s Place and Saint Paul’s Court.

Mcllwain faces two assault charges along with additional counts of menacing and injuring a minor under 17.

Police say this case has been troubling.

“Obviously a 12-year-old child gets assaultedl, that sticks in your mind,” said Sgt John Toal to AsAmNews.
