10 killed, 10 injured in Lunar New Year shooting

A shooting at a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park, California, late Saturday night has killed 10 people and injured 10.

Monterey Park, a suburb just outside of Los Angeles, is home to one of the largest Asian American populations in Southern California. Many people had gathered at a dance hall in the area on Saturday night to kick off the Lunar New Year celebrations.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the shooting occurred around 10:22 p.m. at Star Ballroom studio in the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue. Celebrations had ended just under an hour ago.

CNN reports that five men and five women were killed. The sheriff’s department says that 10 other injured victims “were transported to numerous local hospitals and are listed in various conditions from stable to critical.”

According to BBC, the suspect is believed to have entered a second dance hall shortly after the first shooting where they were disarmed by witnesses. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

Authorities believe the suspect is an Asian man in his 30s to 50s. The LA County Sheriff’s department has released photos of the suspect.

Monterey Park has canceled its second day of Lunar New Year celebrations.
