Woman left paralyzed in violent Chinatown robbery speaks out

A woman left paralyzed after being attacked at gunpoint in a violent robbery in Houston’s Chinatown says she’s determined to walk again.

Nhung Truong spoke to ABC13 about the February 13 incident when a teen followed her for 20 minutes after she left a bank until being thrown to the ground by a second teenager.

She suffered broken ribs and fractured her spine, leaving her paralyzed and unable to walk.

“I have to do exercises until I can walk again,” Truong said determined to bring herself back to normal.

Fox26 reported that 17-year-old Joseph Harrell confessed to the crime.

“Once he learned he didn’t have the money she withdrew from the bank, he went back and assaulted her again by picking her up and slamming her down on the concrete,” said HPD robbery Detective Tyrous Fontenot to Fox13.

Police also arrested 19-year-old Zynika Woods who investigators say followed Truong out of the bank.

“When I saw it, it just made me mad as hell,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Slammed her down like she was a bag of potatoes.”

Truong continues to live in fear and depends on her three children and mother to care for her.

“I’m feeling really scared that they are coming after us because of what happened. I need everyone’s help to get them the punishment they deserve,” Truong said.

A Go Fund Me campaign to raise money for her recovery has generated more than 260,000 in contributions.
