Police at the University of California Los Angeles are searching for a group of male suspects they say were involved in a potential hate crime near campus.
According to a press release from the UCLA police department, the incident occurred around 12:55 a.m. on June 11. A UCLA student and her friends were walking near the 400 block of Gayley Avenue when a group of six males drove past.
The group of young men threw eggs at the victim and her friends. According to the press release, one suspect shouted a racial slur while throwing eggs. The victim declined medical attention at the scene.
Police say they believe the suspects are males ages 17-21. The primary suspect is described as a White male. Three of the other suspects were Asian males and two were White males. The race of the seventh suspect is unknown. The car they were driving has been described as a beige or gray Mercedes convertible.
A press release from The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) stated that the victim said the group was yelling anti-Asian slurs. AsAmNews contacted the UCLA police department to confirm the victim’s racial or ethnic identity but the department did not respond in time to comment.
Police have asked anyone with information to contact UCPD Detectives at 310-825-9371.
